The final release of the golf club is where the big payoff should come in the golf swing to give us effortless power. The unhinging/uncocking and rotation of the wrists to accelerate the golf club is where the majority of the clubhead speed is produced in the final milliseconds of the swing and if you don't know how to do it, you'll lose a ton of distance and take a toll on your body.
In the example below, my student Mark was trying to turn his body hard through impact which is simply not nearly as efficient as learning how to release, especially the right hand. He was digging trenches for divots and hitting many shots fat. After working on the Right Arm Only Downswing Drill for about 10 minutes, we were able to produce the results you see below. The payoff? Mark felt he was putting in less than half the effort for the same or more distance, had more control, a better contact and took a massive load off his body. He was pretty grateful and spoke about his lesson afterwards in this short clip: http://vimeo.com/16693291 The top left picture was his baseline swing. The top right is Mark working on right arm only swings, the bottom left is the result 10 minutes later. The bottom left is a comparison shot next to my swing. ![]() |

Chuck,
Is he holding is left hand on his right shoulder? If so is this the proper way to do this drill?

I just wanted to add the grip is HUGELY vital in relation to being able to properly release that clubhead. I had been struggling for quite a bit with hitting that high, weak cut shot, regardless of people trying to give me tips or whatever. The funniest thing was, they all said my swing was beautiful. Too bad the ball flight was always fading off and not going very far (145 yard 7-iron ftw). I had an appointment with the club fitter to check everything out, lies and lofts and whatever, and I was getting dead center marks on the lie tape. That, coupled with a 92 mph average CHS for a 6-iron, things just weren't making sense. The pro was smiling the whole time as I couldn't mishit the ball, but appeared baffled about my face angle being all over the charts, considering he said my swing looked awesome.
The pro took a look at my grip, especially my right hand, and told me to get back to those basics again. I guess over time my grip had just gotten kind of jacked up (right hand had found its way too far under the club) from all the fixation on club positions (I was searching for any answer I could for my poor ball flight) and not enough emphasis on the REAL fundamentals. Make no mistake, the drills and everything Chuck is teaching is, I believe, THE right way to go. BUT, do not ever forget the real fundamentals! Your hands are the only point of contact with the club, and they have to be in the right position in order to make everything fall into place my friends! so was your grip too strong and now it's more neutral? i tend to have the same problem so just curious? I would think that a weaker grip would lead to more of a fade....

nah, the right hand just got too far under the club, like chuck was talking about in the grip video where you get in a more palm grip (kinda caddie grip i guess?). it wasn't necessarily too strong, it was just in the wrong spot to where both my hands couldn't work together as well. no leverage, poor release, no snap.
